In coordination with National Library Week, the Sarasota County Library System will announce the book candidates for the 2011 One Book, One Community program on Friday, April 15, on this website.
Voters will have the opportunity to choose from six titles, three fiction and three non-fiction. Ballots can be filled out here, and ballot boxes and paper ballots will be available at all Sarasota County libraries, some Sarasota County High School media centers, the Senior Friendship Centers, the Jane Bancroft Cook Library of New College of Florida, Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus and the State College of Florida Venice campus.
Voting will occur April 15 through May 22. The book that collects the most votes will be selected as the “One Book” that the community will read together. Last year was the first year in which the book was selected by the community, with over 2,000 people voting to select “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.
“The goal of One Book, One Community is to start conversations and to stimulate dialogue,” said Barb McDonald, outreach coordinator of the Sarasota County Library System. “The sharing of ideas, opinions and insights is what helps to build a community and that benefit is at the heart of this program.”
The public is also invited to post their reviews and comments about the six title options here during the voting process.
The selected book will be announced June 3. Book discussions and themed events will be scheduled throughout the county beginning in October. For more information, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000.
