Sarasota County Libraries announce 2014 ‘One Book’
“Muck City: Winning and Losing in Football’s Forgotten Town” by Bryan Mealer is the Sarasota County One Book for 2014. This year’s One Book is an authentic portrayal of a rural Florida town mired in Florida’s past.
“Muck City” details the struggles of gridiron warriors, both on and off the field, while highlighting a community’s history and way of life, said Barb McDonald, outreach coordinator for the Sarasota County Library System.
“Since this year is the program’s 10th anniversary, we wanted to feature a book, which like the original Sarasota One Book, related to Florida’s history,” said McDonald. This non-fiction selection is about high school football, the sugar cane migrant worker history of Belle Glade, and the inspiring stories of young men who make it out of the muck to become recognized football stars.
One Book, One Community brings people together to share stories. The year’s book appeals to readers of all ages and was selected because of its inspirational message.
One Book is planning a variety of events in early 2014, including a visit by the author.
