The Asolo Repertory Theatre Guild will present The High School the third play from the World of Sholom Aleichem. More information here.
The World of Sholom Aleichem uses the figure of a bookseller peddling wares from his pushcart as the narrator who links the three one-act plays together. The third play, The High School, focuses on a Jewish merchant who is cajoled by his loving but pushy wife to help prepare their teenage son for high school. However, in Czarist Russia the schools have severe quotas designed to exclude Jews. Even with good grades and bribes, the boy is denied admittance. The family moves from city to city searching for a school that will give him the education he deserves.
This play was selected to encourage dialogue between audience members, and explore themes in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Join us after the reading for a post-show discussion as we explore the connection between these two works.
