One Book, One Community 2018: The Reveal

One Book One Community 2018 selection

When the One Book Selection Committee got together to decide the 2018 selection, everybody brought some ideas for discussion. Many choices were presented by the group–fiction, science fiction, nonfiction, and biography…something for everyone.

At each meeting, we worked hard to narrow the choices down. How did we do it? We looked at many factors, weighed them carefully, and had thorough discussions and debates.

First and foremost, is it a great book? Does it inspire you in some way? Does the book come in a variety of formats? Who would be the audience for this book? What kind of programs could we have? Are there community agencies that might be good partners? Is the author available?

It’s a tough but rewarding process, and when some books seem to rise naturally to the top of the list, we know we have a good contender. For 2018 the selection is Daniel Bergner’s Sing For Your Life: A Story of Race, Music and Family.

It’s the incredible true story of Ryan Speedo Green, who grew up in a violent and confusing world. At the age of 12, he became violent himself, and was sent to a juvenile facility of last resort. As he grew, he was lucky enough to have people fighting for him to have a chance at something better.

Through Ryan’s sheer will to overcome the reality he was living, he took advantage of each new opportunity, and pushed himself forward.

In 2011, at the age of twenty-four, Ryan won a nationwide competition hosted by New York’s Metropolitan Opera, beating out 1,200 other talented singers. Today, he is a rising star performing major roles at the Met and Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.
